10/25/06 - Tinicum Lighthouse
We successfully completed the 2006 New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge on Sunday night at the Tinicum Lighthouse in Paulsboro. Pretty much the same metal tower design as the Finn's Point Lighthouse, but this one was open for climbing.
In some ways, it was the most surreal of all the lighthouses we saw that weekend. It was next to a baseball field in a working-class neighborhood surrounded by oil refineries, with a view of Center City Philadelphia across the Delaware River.
While ending at Sandy Hook might have been a nicer conclusion to the tour if we had started with Tinicum instead, at least we didn't have a far drive to get back home. In the end, we managed to see all eleven inland lighthouses in New Jersey in just two days.
